Automatic translation APIs and web forms

With the Google translate API closing down as a free service on December 1, 2011 and its version 2 already implemented as a paid service, it is a good time to check what the concurrence has to propose.

Here is a list of automatic translation tools available at the moment:

  • Bing Translator
The form offers language detection and translation for 37 languages, either as plain text or by giving it a website URL.
A free API is also available after having signed-up (I bet a lot of on-line services will move from Google Translate API to Bing API by the end of the year, thus increasing both visibility and costs for their service).
They support 37 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Haitian, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
  • Google Translate
Google still offers its automatic translation service as a free one from their web form.
Sixty-three languages are actually supported: Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, Galician, Georgian, German, Greek, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (the translations are made in Brazilian Portuguese), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Welsh, and Yiddish.
  • imTranslator
imTranslator form is based on other translation engines, namely Google and Bing, hence provide a layer between the user (their translator can be integrated within a web site) and the Machine Translation providers.
They support 39 languages: Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, English, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Welsh, and Yiddish.

SYSTRANet offers a web form translation, translation from an URL address, and once signed-up with a free account, translation from an RSS URL and even file translation (Microsoft Office (doc, docx) documents and RTF, HTML, HTM, and TXT files).
The language pairs supported are: from Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish to Dutch, English, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
  • World Lingo
World Lingo proposes a free translator limited to 500 words. Free text, website from URL and document (doc, docx, txt, html, pdf and xml) supported.
They support 32 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Farsi, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Urdu.

Mancko provides you with a free language detection tool. Enter the website URL and it will tell you which language is the most prominent on the page among 220 supported languages.
